Since there is no cure for this disease, those who are affected must learn the proper was for managing type 2 diabetes. The diagnosis of this issue comes at a shock for most people, but the real scary part is the doctor telling you that you must completely change how you live your life. We are creatures of habit, and most of us do not like, and are resistant, to change. However, when it comes to a diagnosis such as this one, making the necessary changes is the only option that will prevent the very serious and dangerous effects it can cause.

While your doctor may prescribe you some diabetes medicine, the only way to truly make significant improvements is to eat a healthy diet and get the recommended amount of exercise each week. For most people these are going to be some very difficult changes, especially when you are around friends and family. However, if you want to be able to enjoy the company of these people for many many more years, it is something you must do.

Since an overwhelmingly large percentage of the people who have type 2 diabetes are overweight, getting into a good fitness routine is a must. It is very important to get between 30-60 minutes of exercise each day. You do not need to be doing extremely hard training, especially those who are very out of shape. Start off small, with things like walks around the neighborhood, and gradually increase the difficulty as your fitness level improves. Your doctor should be able to recommend you to a good personal trainer who is experienced at helping people to manage type 2 diabetes.

For most people, changing the way they eat will be the hardest part of this process. For many it will mean changing the foods we have eaten our whole lives, and giving up some of the foods we love the most. The goal of a type 2 diabetes diet is not only to control your blood sugar, but also to help prevent some of the negative effects this disease causes. Heart disease and high blood pressure can be caused by diabetes, so eating a diet that helps with those is essential.

The carbs that you eat will have the biggest effect on your glucose levels. You will want to speak with a dietitian about how many you should eat each day, and more specifically with each meal. You will also need to come up with a system for counting carbs, to ensure you are not eating too few or too many. You also want to avoid the types of carbohydrates that are found in processed and unhealthy food. This means you should eat more fresh fruit, whole grains, and drink instead of soda or juice.

Bad fats and excess salts and increase blood pressure and the risk of heart disease. Choosing foods that are low in both of these is a great way to take control of type 2 diabetes.

If you drink a lot of alcohol or smoke, both of those activities need to stop. While these are unhealthy for anyone who does them, the complications can be even worse for those managing type 2 diabetes.
